It seems to me that you're all missing the point that the HDD is powered
down whenever you turn your box off !
It was a change to the OS about a year ago to stop the box making so much
noise when it was off. Of course, this is also incredibly stupid because
constantly turning a drive on & off while seriously shorten its life-span -
which is why I leave my box turned on all the time, and only silence the
TV/sound as my 'off' status.
