I have hooked up a daveyfire Ematch directly to the positive terminal
on a 12v 7 amp-hour sealed lead acid battery the other end is connected
to a steal rod inserted into my garden. It hasn't fired and has been
out there for a couple of hours now.

Thanks for the CPC tip, I think I have found what I need there :)
