I'll second that - I arrived late enough on Saturday to have missed the
M1400 flight (over 16,000ft I gather) and Colin's monster, but the rest
of the day's flying more than made up for it. The Rebel 6" Raptor on an
N2500 was stunning - a very graceful ascent accompanied by a seriously
meaty roar :-) Anyone know how high they got with that? The recovery
was very lucky, since the rocket appeared not to have separated at
apogee, but when the mains came out right on time all was well - way to
go guys!
Congratulations to Graham and Sean, who both certified Level 3 on
Hypertek M's on Saturday. The sound was incredible on both flights,
even from all the way back up at the UKRA hut. Commiserations to Dave,
the up part was very impressive, a real shame the recovery didn't go to
plan.
I still can't get over the amount of 'big stuff' launched this weekend
- SPASE reached well over 18,000ft with their L1115-powered rocket, Ady
Waters pushed his personal record up to over 15,000ft and (I'm still
annoyed I missed it) Iain Banks flew his 6" Ultimate Endeavour on
another L1115 for what I gather was a perfect and very impressive
flight.
There were plenty of other good flights on Saturday, model and HPR -
for one Chris Eilbeck's trusty ADR2 survived a delay stack failure (and
subsequent ejection of the motor casing about burnout), followed by
some amount of ballistic recovery, with no more damage than a shredded
'chute, and good video all the way up and most of the way back down.
Today wasn't quite so good weather-wise (rainy start, windy all day)
but that didn't stop Pete Williams flying a minimum-diameter
L800-powered carbon thing, and Iain and Gary from CROCK attempting to
drag-race K-powered PML Nimbuses. As it was, they launched separately,
but both were very impressive, Gary's on a K660, Iain's on a K445.
Damian et al (aka the hybrid lot) managed to get off a bunch of
HyperTeks today - some of them in a hybrid drag-race. Damian seems to
have infected the rest of the WRS with hybrid fever, and Uncle Bob's
rocket shop seems to have a growing presence among UK fliers. Damian's
certainly doing a good job with the HyperTek system, and with new lines
becoming available (and supported by) from Uncle Bob, we should
hopefully see more hybrid motors being flown in the UK.
I'm sure I've missed many other interesting flights (4 I540 flights
today for one), but it's safe to say KLOB 2005 was an excellent event.
Having missed the last two I'm glad I made this one, I'll have to get
together something big and/or scary for next years :-)
Good to see everyone again, I shall have to get cracking this winter at
turning my pile of tubes (etc) into some more rockets to fly.
