It seems to me that in the so called big society, we need to have the
debate about is the new hi tech making blind people unable to use
domestic appliances.
We seem to be in the age of touch screens, and buttons that do not move to
reflect their condition. In the old days, for example a washing machine
or microwave had a rotary control and buttons which could have dots on
them and the position of said dial and buttons made it easy to use ones
marked up. Radios also, had tuning knobs and bandchange switches that were
obvious to use. Once again the digital keypad and more recently even touch
sensitive screens on these devices has made them impossible to use if you
have severe sight loss.
Now computers can now have voices for no cost, even the Iphone has a
rudimentary one, as does the Kindle. So why not domestic mass market
appliances like TVs washing machines, microwaves dishwashers radios dvd
players. Also why oh why dont those making dvds put a talking menu on
their discs. Its not of much use putting an audio described option on the
menu if nobody can tell where to go to get it!
In today's world such things can be bought off the shelf. the bbc has been
using talking menus for years. In the case of appliances, Sharp were
building simple voice messages in over 20 years ago.
Come on, its not rocket science, lets not exclude those who cannot see.
if there are doctors reading this, perhaps you also need to realise that a
touch screen booking in system is no substitute for a receptionist.
