Re: Saving from a PVR hard drive

I've tried many of the suggestions you've already received ...

Every video capture card I've tried, though the last was admittedly a
few years ago, failed to keep sync between audio and video.

Recording via DVD works, but if you want to edit the result to get rid
of advert breaks, etc, then you need a rewritable option such as
DVD+-RW or DVD-RAM. Also you may find that the aspect ratio is not
respected (this is not a big problem, when watching such a DVD you
simply set the AR manually on the TV), and occasionally you may find
that DVDs made in one stand-alone box don't play in another.
Nevertheless, if you already have a DVD recorder, especially one of
the models with a hard disk that you can do some editing on, then this
can work. I used a Panasonic (a DMR-E100H, but that's quite an old
model now) to record all the VHS tapes that I wanted to keep,
transferred them to the PC via DVD-RAM, and turned them into final
DVDs on the PC. It's a lot of work though. Here's a section on my
website about the Panny ...
http://www.macfh.co.uk/JavaJive/AudioVisualTV/PanasonicDMRE100H/PanasonicDMRE100H.html
.... in particular, the page about transferring video to a PC may give
an idea of the sort of things involved, and things to watch out for.

You can also try mounting the hard disk directly in the PC. If you're
already familiar with the insides of a PC, the insides of a PVR are
not very different, and if the thing is giving problems anyway, you've
less to risk by giving it a go. The big question wail be: is the
format of the PVR's HD readable at the file level in a PC? I am not
familiar with your model, so cannot answer that in advance. As
explained on the Hard Disks page of my Panny section linked above,
their HDs are NOT readable at the file level in a PC. But my Pace Twin
PVR, and quite a few others I believe, uses a format called (IIRC)
STAVFS, and although this too is not directly readable at the file
level, a group of enthusiasts have written some software called
"TwinRip" which can copy video of the hard disk ...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TwinRIP/
Even if your HD's format is different, you may find that someone in
the group will know about it and be able to give advice, or just
search for something like:
<make> <model> hard disk format
<make> <model> read hard disk in PC

Hi,

I've a PVR that I've had a few years now and the hard disk is quite full and
beginning to do odd things (like recording programs for 0 minutes). I've
deleted a load of stuff so that there's about 40 hours of space left but
it's still playing up. I was going to reformat the disc but wanted some way
of saving all the recordings that I want to keep. Short of buying a DVD
recorder and manually recording everything is there a more practical way of
doing this e.g are there SCART-USB leads that would enable me to connect to
my PC?

Thanks
