To do that with my wife's aunt's telly, it'd have to get up and twiddle the
knobs. ;-)
In this case, at least then, its good that many freeview boxes,
including the TV onics have an output volume control so you can leave
the TV at a set level and use the box volume.
I fully agree about the comment that the sound on a new TV will
probably be very poor in comparison with most CRT types.
Some earlier flat types had very good sound...not so now due to the
public buying by looks alone and going for the slimmest frames. There
is no longer room for decent speakers.
