Any chance of connecting the coax fly-lead up to a spare STB, then

wall, and see if that affects the signal. If the signal with the STB
is OK, loop the coax around the TV mount, and with the STB well away
from the mount, move the TV back to where it would normally start to
misbehave. If everything is ok, I would think that a dodgy TV coax
socket is looking more and more likely.
Yes, I'll have a go at that when I get a chance.
Not sure that it would prove conclusively that the coax socket is duff - it
could be that the STB is happy with a poorer signal than the TV. [Also
analog reception is perfectly ok, and the set works ok on *some* digital
channels when against the wall].
Incidentally, as reported earlier, I have now covered the in-line
socket/plug with baking foil to reduce any noise pickup. I have also nipped
up the centre conductor of the set's coax socket a bit so that the plug is a
tighter fit - and the situation seems to have improved a bit.
