I see there is a download only upgrade for the loader version for this
box. The instructions say to use an RS232 null modem cable. They
tell you not to use an adapter. However, my computer does not have a
serial port in common I believe with many other modern computers. Has
anyone tried using a USB to serial converter and did it work okay?

It has been done (and discussed on
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=119 ) though I don't
know whether there are any problems getting it to work.

Does this upgrade make much practical difference?

I assume you have loader version 4.07 (which says STING on the front panel
while it is loading) and want to upgrade to 4.09 (which says DUOVISIO).

There isn't really much difference: it loads slightly quicker and you don't
lose the RF pass-through while it is loading - which used to mean that if
you were watching TV using its own tuner you would lose reception for a few
seconds if the Humax boots up to record something &c. You still lose the
sound from SCART pass-through with the new loader - rather annoying if you
are watching a videotape.
