Bill,
Avast requires you to register and they then e-mail you a registration code - very quickly. You then insert this into Avast. You need to re-register every year but it's free.
I had a problem where the registration e-mail never reached me but I'm the only person I know who has had that problem and I've had other issues which I attribute to my ISP.
BTW, please tell me you're not like my father, who whenever he buys a computer mag, feels to need to install everything on the freebie CD, whether he will ever need it or not. You can end up with acres of crap slowing down boot up like that.
Finally, you might want to look at Adaware, or similar. You can, over time, build up quite a list of naughty cookies and these can affect boot up. AdAware will identify them and then you can delete them all. That made a huge difference to my father's PC.
