As far as the 'fix' is concerned, clearly I need an installer with the
right equipment to enable some sort of means to test the aerial other
than connecting to the receiver. The cost is going to be close to
£100 which I find excessive. The cost of the aerial is at most £25
retail for a multi element and £10 for multi directional, so
£75.00/£90.00 for the cable, 1 hour labour and overhead (Van + ladder+
analyzer + office services) seems steep to me.

I suspect if aerial fitters can command those prices they are making a
very comfortable living! In my opinion a fair price would be £50 plus
cost of materials but this is 'rip off' UK so I better get adjusted to
it I guess! Perhaps the forth-coming recession will bring some sanity
into the prices being quoted.

Competition and the laws of supply and demand apply in this market. Anyone
is free to set themselves up as an aerial installer, and to do it properly.
Anyone can go on the courses, learn on the job with someone experienced,
then buy a van, test equipment, H & S equipment, tools, insurance, ladders,
etc. I have helped quite a few people along this path incidentally, and I'm
proud to say that I have helped in the production of quite a few good,
competent, honest installers.

So, since this isn't a closed shop or a cartel, prices are determined by
market forces. Really, if you don't like the prices charged, your only
option is to not buy.

Believe me, no-one makes a fortune at this job.

Bill
