In my experience, it seems to me that only the BBC and Virgin 1 use
Freeview Playback.. None of C4's range of identikit, timeshifted,

Not so. I've been using Freeview Playback successfully to record the
ER series on Thursday nights on More 4

And I have a series link setup for Primeval on ITV1 and Numbers on ITV3.

These channels broadcast CRIDs:

All BBC channels (but only limited coverage of News24)
C4 / E4 / M4 / Film4 and their +1 channels
ITV 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 and their +1 channels
