Anyone got either of these LCD TVs?

Having listened to advice here about 'future-proofing' our kit even if we
don't need the ultimate resolution immediately, we've been looking at 1080p
LCD TVs in the 37-40 inch range. Two specific sets which look quite good
are:
Sony KDL-40V3000 and
Philips 37PFL9632
Do any of you own own either of these? If so, your comments would be very
much appreciated.
The Philips is somewhat more expensive than the Sony despite being a bit
smaller, but boasts something called Ambilight. Does this do anything
useful, or is it a gimmic which will spend most of its time turned off? In
case it's significant, the set will be on a stand, diagonally across a
corner - not flat against a wall. Would that negate the effects of Ambilight
anyway?
