OT: BBC iPlayer and peer-to-peer

All,
Perhaps I missed the discussion of this aspect of the BBC iPlayer but I was
amazed to discover last night that the iPlayer uses P2P technology and
effectively requires me to "trust" the BBC to have access to my computer.
Of course it's a "trusted network" etc. etc. but I'm totally paranoid about
such opaque access to my PCs, which is why my virus count for the last 10
years is a nice round zero!
I presume there is no legal way to get the BBC stuff without using their P2P
network?
Paul DS.
