Having acquired a 250Gb HDD the other day I decided to splash out

Not bad for 40 squids, I thought. Be ideal for my 32" CRT Tosh
with
home cinema, can play all that music and movies I have 'obtained'
over
the years, plus show may photos.
Anyway, bought the beast yesterday - good quality electronics, nice
extruded case, remote and lots of leads provided, including
component
output.
Fitted the hard drive - bugger - it has to be set as "Master" and I
did not have a jumper link, so I could not test it. I will get a
jumper link today and try tonight.
Has anyone else tried using one of these media streaming HDD cases?

It's just a rebadged (and over-priced) Sumvision Aqua
http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1963
Have used one for the last couple of years as DVD storage for the
kids
stuff, had trouble getting it to use MPEG's but it works fine with
VOBs (though again it's sometime easier to store/rip it as a single
VOB rather than the default 3 or 4 chunks that you normally find) and
AVI files. The menu system is clunky if you use the 'Videos'
Pictures'
options as it attempts to use moving thumbnails of everything so is
slow, using the file system browser is the best option but also
highlights that the file name have about an 11 character viewable
liimit so bear in mind when naming files.
There are newer versions such as teh Sumvision Zengo(andf maplin had
some on offer in our local store that looked similar) that include
recording capabilites. Reviews sound mixed on these though as teh
recording especially isn't the best however they alos offer ethernet
ports on those which is a bonus though not sure how they work within
a
network and what advantages they may offer.
Thanks for your quick response - not a lot less than the Sumvision if
you take into account delivery etc.
I also have a Humax 9200t and I thought that if I could convert the
transport stream to decent MPEGs, I could clear some of the stuff off
my 9200t and not have to bother about burning DVDs. Your saying that
MPEG playing is a bit iffy is a little bit concerning.
However, most of the downloaded stuff I have is .avi so I should be
ok.

I see DavidM says he has little trouble with MPEGS so it could be down
to the convertor/conversion process but I definitely struggle. I also
have the humax 9200 and it was much teh same reasons as you say. I was
intending to archive off the kids programs onto the media player. I
was using HDTV2MPEg and some other freeware convertors to convert the
Humax .ts files to mpegs. If I then make the mpegs into a DVD VOB and
load that it works just not as individual MPEGS for some reason. I
gave up for the time being on the MPEG conversion(I bought a cheap PVR
in the end for storing the kids TV progs) so now just use our player
for DVD archives and for playing any avi files we download.
(The SVP price is good if you can get a 99p delivery weekend, standard
delivery admittedly is more hence teh prices being close that way)
Thanks again - the HDD is a Maxtor 250Gb and I note from reviews etc
that the jumper should be set for CS, not Master as in the "manual".
Some people report problems with Maxtors - I trust I will be OK. A
bit disappointed to read that it needs disconnecting from the USB to
enable AV out. I have a long, active USB lead that I use for the
Humax upload and I was thinking of leaving it connected to the
Sumvision. The Tosh telly has component in (sadly not progressive,
not on my earlier model) so I should be ok PQ-wise.

Any of these media players play HD video files, upto 1080p?
Not sure about the Maplin box but my freecom network media player can
manage 1080i via component.
