Not bad for 40 squids, I thought. Be ideal for my 32" CRT Tosh with
home cinema, can play all that music and movies I have 'obtained' over
the years, plus show may photos.

Anyway, bought the beast yesterday - good quality electronics, nice
extruded case, remote and lots of leads provided, including component
output.

Fitted the hard drive - bugger - it has to be set as "Master" and I
did not have a jumper link, so I could not test it. I will get a
jumper link today and try tonight.

Has anyone else tried using one of these media streaming HDD cases?

It's just a rebadged (and over-priced) Sumvision Aqua

Have used one for the last couple of years as DVD storage for the kids
stuff, had trouble getting it to use MPEG's but it works fine with
VOBs (though again it's sometime easier to store/rip it as a single
VOB rather than the default 3 or 4 chunks that you normally find) and
AVI files. The menu system is clunky if you use the 'Videos' Pictures'
options as it attempts to use moving thumbnails of everything so is
slow, using the file system browser is the best option but also
highlights that the file name have about an 11 character viewable
liimit so bear in mind when naming files.

There are newer versions such as teh Sumvision Zengo(andf maplin had
some on offer in our local store that looked similar) that include
recording capabilites. Reviews sound mixed on these though as teh
recording especially isn't the best however they alos offer ethernet
ports on those which is a bonus though not sure how they work within a
network and what advantages they may offer.

My one has no problems playing MPEG2 files, and the quality over normal composite video is very good. Not yet tried it with the VGA out.
MP3s play well, the interface is basic but works. Like Woby says, the picture and music menu options are a waste of time, just use the file browser.
I was impressed to see it recognise a compact flash card as an additional drive. The menu asks you to chose between the internal drive or flash card, both can be browsed using the UI. Another great feature is the one touch backup. Just plug in a flash card and press OTB, it then copies the contents to the main drive.
