Its me again - totally non techie.
I have a multi media computer which is supposed to sing and dance and run TV and all sorts as well as connect to the internet. Its not 12 months old yet.

There seems to be something wrong with my internet connection. Its a dial up modem.
It connects OK to the internet and loads the IE and the Outlook express. Outlook express collects messages and these newsgroups.

In that case you must have established basic connectivity to the Internet.

Typically on an MS Windows PC there is an Icon which shows this in the bottom righthand conrer of your screen.
(Notification area/System Tray) You can click on the icon to display connection details.

The IE goes to the front page and then seems to stop. When I try to go to any other page it comes up " web site unavailable" - not just one page, any page.

I suspect that you have a problem with the way that IE is configured. For example maybe it is trying to use
a proxy server. I would suggest that you tinker with the Connections settings.

You don't say what version of Windows or ISP you are using.

You might find uk.telecom.broadband a better ng even though you don't actually have broadband.

I asked the machine ( cos it said in the message) to check internet connectivity and it came back and told me my " ethernet connection " was faulty.

Does that mean I need a new modem?

No, but I would recommend ADSL broadband using a router.

I haven't a clue what an ethernet connection is.

Never mind, if your only connection is a dial up modem you are not using it.
When you get your web browser working you can look it up on Wikipedia

I have tried pushing all the plugs back in but it still doesn't work properly.

Can anyone help me out here?

If you come across Mozilla Firefox on a PC magazine CD/DVD you could try that.
