In message 2o-dnTrgfa3pG7jaRVnyiwA@xxxxxx,
mike/lisa/claire <clairelisamike@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Proclaimed from the tallest

Its me again - totally non techie.
I have a multi media computer which is supposed to sing and dance and
run TV and all sorts as well as connect to the internet. Its not 12
months old yet.
There seems to be something wrong with my internet connection. Its a
dial up modem.
It connects OK to the internet and loads the IE and the Outlook
express. Outlook express collects messages and these newsgroups. The
IE goes to the front page and then seems to stop. When I try to go to
any other page it comes up " web site unavailable" - not just one
page, any page.
I asked the machine ( cos it said in the message) to check internet
connectivity and it came back and told me my " ethernet connection "
was faulty.
Does that mean I need a new modem? I haven't a clue what an ethernet
connection is. I have tried pushing all the plugs back in but it
still doesn't work properly.
Can anyone help me out here?
What do you mean by IE going to the 'front' page? What does it display? What
happens if you then press F5 (or click on the Refresh button at the top of
the IE window). Have you tried putting a different website into the Address
box at the top of the IE window (say www.google.com) maybe it is just the
'Home' page that has got messed up...?
Your best bet would be to phone whoever you pay for your internet connection
and speak to their technical support, or maybe try one of the Windows
newsgroups. I'm guessing from the age of your computer that it is WindowsXP,
so you could try somewhere like:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
Although there are dozens of other XP NGs around...
