The BIGGEST single problem with DTTV boxes is that they always scan 21-68
and there is usually no control over which station is selected on
auto-tune. Some boxes will retain the first, say, BBC1 they find and put
any others at 800+, others will retain the last BBC1 they find and
relocate the earlier stations to 800+ (I have two different boxes that do
just that before you argue.) The problem is that most people don't
understand this, don't know how to find which station they are watching
(until it gets to local news opt-outs,) how to change it if it is wrong,
and where to find the channel information anyway. The user guide to the
box usually assumes that only one station is 'visible' so this problem
will not occur - OK if you live in a deep Welsh valley I suppose, but many
people in the UK will get overlap and face this problem.

Here is part of a leaflet I had to hand out recently:

As you probably know your part of Swinton is a difficult area for TV
reception. A few years ago we converted the TV distribution system that
serves your bungalow so that you could receive digital TV. This wasn?t
completely successful though. Reception was from the Emley Moor
transmitter, and in summer when the trees are in leaf reception has been a
bit unreliable. This is because the aerial is screened from the transmitter
by Wath Wood.

It?s important that we do all we can to give you good reliable digital
reception because as we get closer to the date when analogue television is
switched off more and more people will have digital TV sets or set-top
boxes. For this reason we have taken unusual steps to improve your digital
reception. We have added an extra aerial and some other components so that
you can receive from two transmitters, Emley Moor as before and now Belmont
as well. Belmont is really intended to serve Lincolnshire but enough signal
comes across into Yorkshire for us to make use of it.

It wouldn?t have been any good to have given you Belmont reception only, for
two reasons. Firstly, because Belmont reception might not be completely
reliable. Belmont signals are not really intended to get as far as Swinton,
so it?s best to keep Emley Moor as a back up. Secondly, because ?Look North?
and ?Calendar? from Belmont have news about Lincolnshire, whereas the Emley
Moor versions have news about Yorkshire.

So what difference does all this make? Well, if you are quite happy with
your TV reception, it makes no difference at all. You don?t need to do
anything.

But if you have digital TV and reception is less than perfect it might be
worthwhile to re-tune your TV set or set-top box so that it finds the
Belmont signals.

Digital TV sets and set-top boxes tune themselves in automatically. Usually
it?s just a case of pressing the menu button and going to the tuning
display, then pressing ?auto?.

When the set is tuning itself in it will find all the digital signals from
both transmitters, so it will have two ?copies? of every channel. TV sets
and set-top boxes vary a great deal in how they deal with this. Some boxes
simply discard the weaker signals. Some store the weaker ones with odd
channel numbers such as 701, 702, and so on. Hopefully you will be able to
find all the channels you want (with the correct news bulletins). Typically
you might find that BBC1 (Belmont) appears on preset 1 and BBC1 (Emley Moor)
appears on preset 701. If you can?t find all the channels you want it might
be necessary to tune in the missing ones manually. To do that have a look at
the instruction book. With some makes of TV set or box manual tuning isn?t
easy, so you might need to ask a ?clued up? friend or relative to help.
Unfortunately a few of the cheaper boxes don?t allow manual tuning at all.

If you have Sky and you notice interference on your Sky reception, this is
because the output of your Sky box is set to one of the channels used for
digital TV from either Belmont or Emley Moor. The Sky box will need to have
its output channel re-tuned. Alternatively, fit a scart cable between your
Sky box and the TV set and select AV on the TV handset.

If your video recorder will not play back properly it might be because the
output of your VCR is set to one of the channels used for digital TV from
either Belmont or Emley Moor. Consult your VCR instruction book to solve
this problem. Alternatively, fit a scart cable between your VCR and the TV
set and select AV on the TV handset.

If you have any queries please ring us on 01709 813419 or 07860 610519.
The tables below show the channel numbers for manual tuning. Keep this
leaflet and show the tables to the installer when you buy a new digital TV
set or set-top box.

Well if you are an example of the level of "expert" we will get on
line is it any wonder the confusion will deepen?

Come on Phil, I have not placed myself as an expert. Most people on here
know and understand EXACTLY what I am saying - and so do you. Just stop
being so damn pedantic.

That was rather uncalled for Phil, if you don't mind me saying so.

Bill
