Re: LCD TV with 576 x 1024 Native Resolution?

Are there any LCD TV's that allow the option of watching standard definition

It would mean watching "letterboxed" all the time because 576 lines will
only fill three quarters of the height on a typical 768 x 1366 screen, and
the width would have to come down to 3/4 too. But purists would prefer to
watch like this sometimes because the picture would almost certainly be
sharper. Alternatively, are there any LCD panels that are actually made for
625 line standard definition TV, with a matrix of 576 x 1024?

I've seen the effect many times on PC monitors. If you have a 768 x 1024 PC
monitor for example, and set the PC to 768 x 1024 also, the screen is much
sharper than any other setting, higher or lower. Set the PC to 600 x 800
(quite similiar to a non-wide TV signal at 576 x 768) and the screen looks
blurred because rescaling is applied. It's this same sort of blurring that
we suffer all the time on LCD TV's because they're all made for 768 lines,
but the picture is 576 lines.

I'm sure the option of watching native resolution in a 3/4 size letterbox
would not be generally popular because most people would far rather have a
picture that fills the screen, but I think it would be a useful option
nevertheless. If I had a 32 inch LCD, and this option was available, the
picture would still be a big as a 26 inch LCD, and sharper than any 26 inch
LCD on the market.

Your resolution figures are a bit off...?

PAL = 720 x 576
NTSC = 720 x 480

Standard Def generally looks lousy on any LCD or plasma display, unless in a smaller window at native res.

It's disappointing that most people's new 'digital' TV's have a far worse picture than did their old analogue ones did...

Freeview looks really ropey on LCDs.

If you have an HD source then it's a totally different can of herrings; both 720 and 1080 sources can look superb (if encoded properly).

Many 1080 sets however even overscan on 1080 sources - this is totally stupid as the resampled images then look softer...

If you do not have an HD source then a CRT TV is the way to go (if still available)... 4:3 for analogue off-air or 16:9 for Freeview/Freesat.

Many people I know have bought themselves HD sets and only watch SD sources - picture quality is near unwatchable unless from a far distance. PS3 looks superb at 1080.

Upscaled SD sources such as DVDs can look pretty good too...
