But the battery needs to be recharged, so some power is consumed
whereas the impression given is that it consumes zero power.

And a rechargeable battery requires far more power to be put into it than
you can get back out, and has a finite life, and has an evironmental cost
associated with its manufacture and eventual disposal.

It's all smoke and mirrors, as far as I can see.
