Both BBC recordings missed the start of the programmes and also
the ends! This is useless, of course. I assume the problem lies
with the EPG rather than with the Humax software.

Nope. This isn't a new issue. The problem lies with the UK
broadcasters deliberately and systematically running programmes
outside their timeslots as a "spoiler tactic" against a competing
channel. ...

Tempting to believe this.

It's been going on for years.

If the BBC were doing what you describe here,
though, it would also be in their interests to adjust the EPG to reflect
these early start times.

They adjust the now+next data on satellite. And presumably on DTT too as
they are fed from the same system. People watching live, or recording on
a Sky+, or a DTT PVR which looks for the data, or a PDC VCR may get the
whole programme. Everyone else doesn't.

I regularly see the BBC 'now' info on DVB-t claiming the programme which should be on to be on whilst the preceding programme is still on, sometimes overrunning by ten minutes, perhaps even cancelled. The NOW/NEXT and EPG are little more than a random guess.
