I got stopped by a woman in the street today who told me her TV reception
had been bad lately and why do they keep playing with the transmission
levels (from Crystal Palace).

I tried to explain that it would more than likely be a problem at her end
but she wasn't listening.

She said she didn't like this new Freeview thing because it always stops
and starts and why don't they just stop playing with the signals like
that. I really did try and convince her I could help but she wouldn't hear
it! I wonder how many people are oblivious to the shortcomings of their
own installations / equipment etc.

Doctors deplore the public's foolhardy attitude to smoking, plumbers wring
their hands about our inefficient boilers, garage mechanics laugh at the way
we slip our clutches and damage our tyre walls, professional gardeners stare
with disbelief at our mossy lawns, estate agents giggle with glee at the
terrible properties some people buy, opticians marvel at the way we stagger
about in old glasses half blind for years after our eyesight has changed,
health care workers are aghast at the way we catch sexually tranmitted
diseases, public health inspectors gag at the insanitary state of restaurant
kitchens, vets are appalled at the way we overfeed our pets, motorway
policemen weep at the consequences of drivers' stupidity, insurance
companies smirk at householders' inadequate cover, builders suck their teeth
and give prognostications of doom, teachers lament parents' feckless
parenting, and people in the aerial industry hoot with mirth at the
ignorance of the public regarding TV reception matters.
