Well,of course not - to the usual brainless "early-adopters" who have
to have the latest gizmo whathever the cost , the concept of the
greatly increased power consumption of LCDs and Plasma is not likely
to be a consideration just like the US jerks who think that the
must-have vehicle is a 4 ton Hummer.
Power consumption of a 32" LCD display is comparable with a similarly sized
CRT. Still plenty of room for improvement with better backlighting
technology. Bigger displays use more power, of course. But then, CRT
displays don't come much bigger, do they, so we can't really make a
comparison?
Plasmas and LCDs are for wankers....£1200 for 36" LCD with tinny
pseudo stereo sound out of tiny and useless speakers in the new
"thin" cabinet ?
A problem easily avoided by not using the built-in speakers. Sound quality
would not even be a factor in my assessment of an LCD or plasma TV. Or any
TV, come to that.
Fortunately for those with more than the usual two neurones between
their ears ..the price of high-quality wide-screen CRT televisions has
collapsed....and the canny buyer is being introduced to modestly
priced TVs filling the market gap now vacated by Philips,Sony and
Panasonic who are overjoyed as Comet and DSG empty the wallets of the
clueless mugs or ,more likely, hike their credit card debt even higher.
I still use my 14 year old 4:3 29" Sony CRT for normal TV viewing. My large
screen needs (DVD and streamed media) are met by a projector and a 100"
screen. Sound is handled by an AV amplifier and 5.1 speaker setup.
I know that my next TV will *not* be a CRT. The writing is on the wall for
that technology, although it has served us well for many years. And when I
decide the time is right to upgrade, it will not be because I am a clueless
mug. It will be because I judge that the replacement technology is superior
in every way, rather than just in most ways (as is the case at present).
