Capture quality modes

I have a DVD recorder which captures stuff fed from my digibox via
scart, and it offers various quality modes which allow me to cram up to
6 hours per standard DVD. I've been trying in vain to discover the
different compression methods used for these modes; I assume they're
just quick-and-dirty things like reducing the pixel and colour
resolution?
