I think that is one of the main factors. However to my ears R3 DTTV
also simply gives the impression of having less in the way of
noticable noise, distortion, etc. Hard to be sure what the balance of
reasons may be, but for my own listening the conclusion is fairly
clear. Just sounds preferrable.

A year or so ago the R1-4 DTT signals were very distorted. Odd, because
the same data stream is supposed to be used as for the satellite
transmissions. For this year's Proms I have given DTT another listen and
the audio sounds as good as or better than satellite now. And they have
reduced the level of the applause so that the announcers don't have to
scream over the top of it, which used to cause pumping of the
compressors on fm.

During last year's proms one broadcast on DTTV was spectacularly bad. IIRC
this was the afternoon repeat of VW's Sea Symphony. When it started the
sound was grossly 'modulated' - bit like the sound process for a Dalek, but
with a gain modulation at a few tens of Hertz. I wondered for a while if
the sea had broken through and they were all gargling under-water. :-)

Then, part way through the performance, the sound vanished for a few
seconds. Then when it re-appeared it was fine. No more gargling. The sea
had been driven back!

More recently, the debacle with the R3 DAB bitrate change caused really
gross distortion effects during the first week or so of the proms. This
then changed after a while, into a sort of 'confused' effect. Less obvious
as anharmonic distortion effects, but the orchestra sort of melting into a
slab of acoustic treacle with no real stereo image. The sound now seems
somewhat better on R3 DAB than it was at the start of the proms.

Hence overall, my impression is that we keep suffering from 'finger
trouble' as well as poor decisions. The newer ways to communicate simply
give more ways of getting the results wrong than before, have less
elbow-room for mistakes, and those using the equipment may either not be
aware of this, or not really care. Hence rather 'variable' results at
times.

Slainte,

Jim
