I watched it on BBC 1 using an old Pioneer ITV digital receiver in
conjunction with a 28in Crown widescreen TV connected in RGB mode.

From a distance of about eight feet the pictures looked to be pin sharp,
with very few perceivable artefacts, even when switching to and comparing
with a clean analogue input.

Perhaps some receivers do a better job of smoothing out any imperfections,
you're not by any chance using a 100 Hertz TV are you?.. as I've noticed
that some of these can look quite dreadful (from an artefact point of view)
even with an analogue input.

Same here. I thought that the BBC picture was very good - Sony 42-in plasma, Sony 8000 box, watched about 2.5m from the screen. I watched the bulk of the first half all of the way through (and I generally detest football) and didn't notice any digital nasties. I did quickly flip over to ITV1 - very poor in comparison.

Why is it though that two major terrestrial channels feel compelled to showing the same thing, reducing what limited Freeview choice that we have?
