Although I finally have digital, via my Sky box, I'm still not at
the cutting edge of recording. For the time being I'm continuing
to use
VCR, with my Philips DVD757VR combo.
Is that supposed to be hard to achieve? I made my first attempt
last night, in vain. I set up something called Record Link via the
Philips
VCR Menu, and then assigned Autoview to a programme with my Sky
remote, as per the user guide. But at the appointed time, the VCR
did
not start recording.
Automatic controlled recording from a satellite receiver (RECORD
LINK)
This function automatically starts recording on the switched-off
DVD/VCR when a video signal is recognised through the connected
scart cable. If your satellite receiver has a programming function,
the recording will start automatically (as long as the satellite
receiver is switched on).
1 Use a scart cable to connect scart socket AV2(DECODER) on the
DVD/VCR to the corresponding scart socket on the satellite receiver.
This was the bit that tripped me up recently. I had set up a Thomson
DTI1000 set top box coupled through a VCR to enable a mate to get
Freeview since his very old TV didn't have a SCART and the DTI1000
lacks a modulator.
What I had done was to connect the DTI1000 to the VCR using the "To
TV" SCART and that doesn't send the signal to the VCR when the
DTI1000
is woken using a timer - presumably to prevent it turning on the TV.
I
spent ages trying to find out what the problem was before I thought
to
check whether it made a difference which socket I plugged the VCR
into.
Thanks Phil. I think this is indeed the cause of my problem too. I
don't have those connected. Is it then simply a matter of joining
these with an additional (to be bought) SCART cable, leaving the
present connections as they are?
FWIW, they are:
1. SKY 'TV' Scart to 'AV1' Scart on TV
2. DVD/VCR 'AV1' Scart to 'AV2' Scart on TV
In my DVD/VCR user guide I also read this:
====================
External Input Mode (for VCR features)
--------------------------------------
To receive the signal from an external input (decoder, satellite
receiver, video camera, another VCR, etc), connect to the AV2
(DECODER) socket, and enter "002" with numerical key pads button to
appear [I think that should be 'display'] "AV2" on the screen.
If you use the AV1 (TV) socket, enter "001"...
====================
If I'm interpreting that correctly, I would normally record
(terrestrial) signals from the TV to the VCR, using the default AV1
mode, via the existing Scart socket. With the additional Scart cable
in place I would have to switch mode to AV2 and then follow the full
instructions for recording from Sky Box to VCR?
Presumably, there's no any need to record terrestrial in future, given
the higher quality of digital. So I should be able to remove that
Scart cable and use it in the AV2 position, to save buying another?
You would normally record terrestrial from the VCR's internal tuner, that's
if you ever wanted to.
