Hi all, here's one for the techies among you:

I just moved house to discover a very specific kind of interference
locally affecting my Freeview service,
my local transmitter is waltham and I am about 3 miles away so normally
I get 100% levels and quality accross all channels,

1. all TV channels on the Freeview mux with itv1,2,3 and C4, E4 etc
(chanel 23, 490mhz) get blasted by regular bursts of interfertence,

at certain times of the day and night (haven't established exactly when
yet) I see the carrier signal drop to a constant background 60% with 2
second high energy burst exactly every 3 minutes,
which makes the carrier signal drop to around 30% and the quality drop
to similar levels resulting in picture and sound breakup.

also if I am listening to FM radio the signal gets blasted with loud
static for the same 2 second bursts? on batteries so I am sure the
signal is air bound.

I checked online for close by mobile phone masts and I am a long way
off (in fact I was closer to the local masts before moving house) so I
don't know what to make of it?

any ides of what kind if device is likely to produce this pattern of
interference?

cheers

This is very possibly a radio ham transmitting APRS data signals. These are used for position identification and weather station information, usually on a frequency of 144.8 MHz in the UK, and typically lasting between one and two seconds. If the transmitting station is very close to you it's quite possible it is completely overloading your TV and FM receivers.

Do you have any hams living close by?
