The Important thing to get over to people is that all that an analogue
inpt TV needs to go digital is a STB (say £20 to £60) if DTT .. and
to emphase the use of PVRs to do recording - which is a lot easier than
VCR!!
But 2 years is a long way off - and for the last fifth of UK population
served by CP .. it is 6 years away ... and in any case most homes have
got digital now!
Until switch off actually happens in each area, many people just can't
get digital tv. My 80+ year old nan can't, perhaps because her aerial
isn't very good (we've tried a stb there, but the freeview postcode
checker unfortunatly appears to be correct), but why is she going to
spend money on a new aerial (which may or may not even help) and
stb when the existing tv and aerial are fine? I can't, because the
only tv reception possible here is from a local (Alton) relay. Even if I
could fit a huge mast (conservation area so I can't anyway... in theory
think I'm not even allowed a sat dish...) to get CP it'd be the wrong ITV
channels. As far as I can see, the only way to do switchover without
a fuss would be to make a single multiplex properly available over the
whole country first. And that ain't going to happen when there wasn't
even space for channel 5 analogue in much of the country.
There may be trouble ahead. Even if it's just freeview box prices
doubling in each part of the country during each switch-off!
Wonder if BBC will ever promote a proper freesat system which doesn't
involve sky's epg and boxes?
