A quick straw poll. If the license fee were abolished, would
you pay £10/month to receive BBC broadcasts?

No, as the BBC would die, if we are going to pay 10 quid a
month for PSB what would the point be in abolishing the
licence fee? You seem not to know what is, and why there
should be,
PSB -
it's not for Eastenders!

I'm sorry the question upset you! You know nothing about what I
know. But do you know what a straw poll is?

What you should be asking then is, 'Should PSB be abolished in
the UK', if you do know what PSB is.

No. That's not what I'm asking. I'm not looking for intellectual
answers about PSB. I'm just trying to get a feeling for whether
viewers would pay extra to get BBC programmes.

In that case you are stupidly naive.

Perhaps. I was hoping for a range of simple answers from "No, I
only watch footie on $ky; so the BBC can die" to "Of course. It is
essential and I'd pay twice that".

The pre-amble - of licence fee
abolished - brings up too many other issues to make your
'straw-poll' of any value.

So, if it is of little value, why answer "Without question - yes"?

For the same reason that I answered at all. Dangerous naivety can
only be countered by educating the naive. Whether you know it or not
you threaten to steal from me one of the most precious things I
(jointly) own. You either get educated or kicked in the teeth.

Keep your hands of my Beeb, or else I'll scweam and scweam until I
make myself sick, eh?

For me, the BBC programming is the only (well, nearly only) stuff I
watch. For all I care, the commercial stuff can just go away.

However, if I was one that didn't care about the BBC, and this
could've been shown in the poll, then you can have your best
hissy-fit and no amount of 'education' could convince me otherwise.

Also, when you're thinking about doing your kicking, don't forget
that you have no right to PSB. We're just lucky (at the moment) to
have Auntie.

We don't have any right to any TV, all is licensed by HMG, but the
fact that the only resemblance of PSB in the UK is now the BBC (ITV
has long since dropped those credentials whilst Ch4 is going that
way) that alone is reason enough to keep it funded by all who own a
TV.

What the debate should be about is the BBC's use of licence fee money
to compete in the commercial sector rather than to stay true to their
Royal Charter, and in the order in which they are meant to do
things - as I said, programmes like Eastenders are not and should not
be their prim activity.

"Information, Education and Entertainment". Nowhere in the RC does it state
the priority of each. You're leaning against an open door as far as
Eastenders in concerned IMO. I can't see how that fits into any category,
but many millions do.
