Actually I think you dead wrong - it's far too easy to spec a machine that
will suit you and say it's the perfect this, that or the other. In fact
continually adding functions adds complexity, and is a route to a product
that never works - the big boys don't even have a reliable PVR yet. In the
case of the DVD section there's a new format on the way and I can't see
anyone spending a lot of money developing products based around the
current
format.
In any case what's the attraction of a DVD recorder over a hard disk PVR -
not a lot except for those people who archive material - I'd say that most
users of PVR's ( as VCR's before them) use them to time slip their
viewing.
Firstly, people can, and do archive material. Secondly, I doubt I am alone
in sometimes wanting to watch a recording in a different room, or even at
someone else's house - and before you mention it, I'm not interested in
installing a media server and networking my home - neither is the majority
of the population.
So you've spec'ed a product that is very complex, likely to be out of date
in a year, and has a limited market - can't see them doing that in a
hurry,
can you?
Except thet the OP has spec'ed a product which exists in numerous models,
from several manufacturers, but only with a tuner which will be obsolete
within the lifetime of the machine. All the components are available to the
manufacturers as off-the-shelf units and chip-sets, which need just need a
development of existing software to bring together. If we were talking about
anything remotely cutting-edge, or which didn't already exist, I'd agree,
but we are not.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it just isn't in the interests of
manufacturers to produce the OP's ideal PVR at a price which will make it
sell in volume. They would rather carry on selling devices which will be
either obsolete or impractical to use in a couple of years time, so they can
sell you a new one then, in an economic climate where they can name their
price. In the meantime, they can also sell you stacks of Freeview boxes as a
stop-gap.
