I'd keep testing until you've confirmed that this has solved the
problem.

The other player only has coax out, but it is a resonablely good
phono to phono audio lead that is in use. Is there anything special
about audio leads used for digital?

Well, yes. Digital audio cables (SPDIF) are designed to work at much
higher frequencies. You should use a proper cable, which does not mean a
stupidly expensive cable.
