I get people phoning me about amost everything, from TV's to Freeview STBs
that won't respond to any command on the remote control or the equipment
itself.

Nine times out of ten telling them to disconnect the faulty item from the
mains supply and then to reconnect it after few seconds will usually cure
the problem, sometimes much to their amazement, they then usually wind-up by
telling me how clever I am for being able to fix their problem over the
phone!

Computers were never designed as consumer boxes. Where critical applications
are used they are (should!) be based on systems with a long history of testing
or have limited options - preferably both. The trouble with such systems is
that they aren't (by definition) designed to cope with new and untested
inputs. The trouble with set top boxes is that the broadcasters and their
public constantly want to throw more at the systems.

Switch off, count to 20, then switch on is always a good way of clearing any
well-designed but frozen system.
