either the monitor or the graphics card so that all the computer icons and
windows and bitmap images are too bright to view and all the blocky digital

DVD and see all the dark tones even with the brightness and contrast at
maximum on my monitor and the monitor set to Movie mode.
On the couple of LCD monitors that I've tried, you can't raise the
brightness of the black level. So instead of having brightness and
contrast controls - you have contrast and even-more-contrasty controls.
Dunno if that's the standard with LCD monitors. If it is and the
black-level is set a bit low, then there's nothing that can be done
about the loss of shadow detail.
Some media players have brightness adjustments, though.
