Suppose for example you were talking about 100 new messages, all with 10K
attachments, that would be about 1Mb of data. Not a problem for those of
us with Broadband, but I could see it being a pain for anybody who still
has to make do with a modem.
People would only send a graphic when necessary, just as we only send email
attachments when necessary. The email system seems to be able to cope with
vast quantities of huge attachments,
In general, email is removed from the servers a short time after the posting is made. You store the vast amount of information on your own machine if the email is for you
so why can't this system cope with a
few tiny ones?
You may only read a few newsgroup postings but an ISP may be storing posts for 60,000+ newsgroups.
News postings are expected to be kept on the servers for days, weeks or months.
ISPs who still have news servers are spending fortunes attempting to keep pace with the exponential growth of newsgroup postings. Many of the ISPs have now had enough and decided that they will carry zero binary postings or no news at all. I believe that Wanado will be dropping their Usenet service shortly.
