Just a personal view, but I'm fed up with the neverending "upgrade path".
I fell for DVD-Audio and SACD, but they now offer very little. It is
compressed
MP3 and the success of the IPOD that now dominates music playback.
And thank god I never bought one of the early generation plasma's,
we now know component/prog scan only benefits NTSC material etc
and those early Plasma's are not compliant with HDMI/DVI and copy-
protected Hi-def, and that will be the next selling point, we all have our
dvd players, but they now want us to upgrade to next generation etc blah
blah blah.............
Elsewhere in this thread, another poster recommends the Sony 710,
and fine machine it is too, but.....
The whole range, 310/510/710/910, all share the same basics etc,
All trundled off the same production line etc, so production costs would
be similar - the 910 has a DVI output and upscales to pseudo Hi-Def,
But so does my PC's graphics card, and my Soundblaster upsamples
16 bit audio to 24/192 on the fly....... None of the Sony's do, nor any
other standalone DVD recorder?
Sony launched the range here in UK last autumn, over-priced?
My guess is yes, so that as spring nears the prices will drop to more
realistic levels and then they may look more of a bargain, but.......
"Propriatary Interface", thats to say the HDD and Burner are "unique"
fitment, so no upgrading with larger capacity HDD from PC World nor
with one of the new fangled Hi-Def burners..... It's a Sony with their
"propriatary interface", Not a bog standard IDE or SATA!
But my PC can be easily upgraded with potential future tech goodies.
Over in Germany, to be soon launched a DVB equipped DVD R with
400gb HDD and upscaling DVI output - from Philips, rumour is it will
launch here spring with a projected retail price of £400, but so will
a Samsung, and possibly a Tosh? Should one wait? And of course
they will all burn only the established DVD format, which very soon
they will want us to abandon and "upgrade" to the new Hi-Def, larger
capacity - Just bare in mind V2000, Betamax, Minidisk etc etc etc etc
I can do all of that on my PC with affordable upgrades if and when
they prove to be the correct path?
The Humax 9200 PVR - much lauded, and quite attractive too!
But this very afternoon in Oxford street, London - John Lewis and
Dixon's Marble arch, Not stocking? Dixons salesman gave a classic
salesmen reason, they sell - and all stock is gone as soon as it arrives
- but they've had no stock so far in 2006? A slighty intriquing answer
from the JL rep - "unacceptable return rate for that product"?
I'm glad I was cautious and waited...... and I'll continue to be too.
I've had my whinge, it's the continuous upgrading, on a path that
may not succeed or is left behind too early? It bugs me big time.
You have a Toppy, it has a USB2 output - for my ha'penny's worth,
that is the safest option - transfer the mpeg files to your PC, and
do the editing and burning on your PC. You save an awful lot of dosh
on a standalone product that may not last the upgrade course?
The only caution being is that MPEG2 files are "variable" and codec
dependent - MPEG1 and MPEG4 ain't, so all editing software will be
compliant with those MPEG type files, but Not MPEG2 files, bloody
typical innit huh.........
Check with Topfield which editing software do they recommend for
thier produced MPEG2 files........ If it's Roxio or Ulead, it'll be a piece
of cake........
