No, you can't have meant portend. It doesn't make sense. Protend makes much
more sense. I think this is an example of automatic writing, in which the
spirits of the dead take over our hands and make us write things we don't
know. I suffer from it sometimes. The demon drink causes me to reliquish
control, and next morning I find that I have written a great swathe of
gibberish on uk.tech.digital-tv.
Anyway, the last person to call me William was a Sunday School teacher who
turned out to be . . . oh, you don't want to know. Ancient history; let's
bury it. But just bear in mind that if you call me William I will visualise
you florid faced and breathing heavily, with one hand holding the Holy Bible
aloft and the other fiddling about in your trouser pocket as you instruct us
ten-year olds in scripture.
