Yep, sounds strange. I remember my LCD calculator suffering a limited viewing angle when the batteries started running flat. May be related or not so to be definate, get yourself down to a shop displaying the product (maybe not the place you bought yours!). From what you are describing I'd think it would be noticable instore if it was a "feature" or fault with yours.
