Yes, initially that was the main reason. The film industry saw television as a
threat and felt the need to respond with something television couldn't offer,
which was a larger picture. Architectural constraints forced this enlargement
sideways, which television of the day couldn't match because of limitations in
manufacturing techniques of cathode ray tubes. But technology has improved
since then.

I would dispute that. A brief examination of most natural habitats indicates
that most of the significant visual information is distributed around the
horizon, rather than above and below.

You are on much stronger ground here with the "waste of space" argument. A
widescreen CRT set certainly occupies a great deal more space for the same
picture height. This is why my next TV display is probably going to be a
projector and a pot of white paint - a much bigger picture when I want it, and
an unobtrusive little box on a high shelf when I don't.
