I can't think of any setup option on the DHD4000 that would cause this. Are you sure you haven't inadvertently selected some sort of zoom mode on the TV?
Once again, I've been pointed in the right general direction. The TV can be set to various settings, 4:3, 16:9, various "zoom" settings, "breetbreest" or something that I can't now remember - when these are set, for the picture, the DHD4000 seems to over-ride them to give the picture you select on the DHD4000 - however, for menus, the TV settings seem to take effect. I have fiddled with the TV settings, and the above "breetbeest" or whatever it was seems OK; 14:9 is a bit too small, various other settings have their effects. Now I can see what to press! Thanks. .
