Alot of companies are slow of the mark and it's resulting in alot of
people going the route of building the own PVR using free open source
software like MythTV (www.mythtv.org)
I will build my own PVR when digital becomes available in my area in a
few years time. I would want to put network cable in mosts rooms going
to a cental point out of sight (ie a cupboard), have at this point a PC
to use as a backend media server with a couple of DTT Decoder cards and
large harddisks installed (loaded with MythTV), PC is connected to
broadband to download once a 14day epg listing available free. Then in
key rooms (Living room / bed room to start with) I'd connect to the
network frontend boxes (ie Xbox, Imac mini, or a quiet cheap pc
installed with MythTV frontend) to watch record/live programmes from
the backend server.
Each frontend works independantly and the system is full upgradable,
want another room to have access, just get a pc box install MythTV and
connect to the network. Want to record from satellite, if the current
back end have room for a Sat Card just add it else add a extra PC with
the card installed to act as a slave backend that the master speaks to.
Extra capacity is easy to increase, just add a extra harddisk drive.
Your dvd films can be transfered on to the backend for any one in the
house to access, same with music and games. I also think that
harddisks will replace writable dvd's - harddisk caddies systems like
icyboxes SATA caddies that support hot plug and play are becoming
popular, get one that supports usb2 and take your programmes with you
when you go away.
