Is there a way of removing the "WIDE" message that keeps appearing when you change channels or the aspect ratio changes? I have a Panasonic TH42PV500 - is there a service menu option that will remove this? CSI on 5 was unwatchable tonight as it kept showing WIDE every few seconds - I guess there was a transmission problem that kept triggering this?

My Panasonic TH42PV500 showed CSI on 5 last night without the switching messages that you suffered from. Did you have you TV running with automatic aspect ratios set? I find this setting not to my taste at all. It's purpose seems to be to always fill the screen whatever the source and it even introduces some distortion to 16:9 material!

Try this, tune to a 4:3 channel and select 14:9. Now when you go to a 16:9 channel it will be displayed as such with no distortion. 4:3 programmes display in the 14:9 frame with no distortion but with a small amount missing top and bottom. The same strategy will work if you select 4:3 when viewing a 4:3 channel.

Correction to the above post. I have just checked channel 5 this morning and can confirm your findings. The WIDE signal flashes on for about 5 seconds and this repeats at fairly frequent intervals. It is a recent fault as all was well a few days ago. The reason I did not see the fault last night was because I was watching via a PVR tuner and this is not affected.

I conclude that it is a transmitter oddity that affects some IDVTVs. If it does not clear in a few days I will look to Five and or Panasonic for a solution. In the meantime I will use a separate tuner to watch Five as a work round.

I think that the Panasonic issue is to a degree the company taking it's eye off the ball recently. Both of my Panasonic IDTVs had great difficulty sorting-out E4 when Big Brother was being 'simulcast' - whenever I watched I got BB even when I knew other stuff was on. Channel 4 said that only [some] Panasonic kit was having this problem. Their HD Freeview box is an utter pile of rubbish. I had one a week before I got my money back - totally unstable. A dealer friend of mine reckons that Panasonic kit is not as reliable as it used to be and the quality is not as good. Add up just these occurences and it makes you wonder (well it does me).
