Correction to the above post. I have just checked channel 5 this morning and
can confirm your findings. The WIDE signal flashes on for about 5 seconds
and this repeats at fairly frequent intervals. It is a recent fault as all
was well a few days ago. The reason I did not see the fault last night was
because I was watching via a PVR tuner and this is not affected.

I conclude that it is a transmitter oddity that affects some IDVTVs. If it
does not clear in a few days I will look to Five and or Panasonic for a
solution. In the meantime I will use a separate tuner to watch Five as a
work round.
