What's a "VCR"? ;-)

The VCR is a brilliant idea. The recording medium is portable and works in
any machine without trouble. This means that I can record anywhere and
play back anywhere. The machines themselves are absolutely free, handed
out by customers who have got Sky+. I have many VCRs in use and about ten
in reserve.

Bill

Ah, it's coming back to me now.
I seem to remember, in a previous life, going round houses fixing
the things.

The universal interchange of tapes between machines was an
ideal that was not always realised.
I would get customers who had built up a vast collection of off-air
recordings on maladjusted decks totally oblivious of that fact because
they never played pre-recorded material.

Now you try explaining why the new machine you are installing
won't play the existing tapes properly!
(actually Bill I expect you have seen this a time or two)

I must admit that on more than one occasion I have very reluctantly
tweaked the new machine slightly to accommodate the old tapes.
