Here we go again.

Look, I'm not denying that mobile reception was one of the main goals, but
it is ridiculous beyond belief to try and suggest that CD-quality audio
wasn't one of the main reasons DAB was designed.

For example, the first time I ever saw any mention of DAB was on Tomorrow's
World (which will probably have been aired around the same time as the demo
you're talking about), and the one and only thing that stuck in my mind was
that they said it would provide radio at CD-quality, and I kept an eye out
for news of it from that day onwards. If they'd have said "DAB will provide
excellent reception quality in your car" I wouldn't even have been
interested in it at all, so don't try to tell me that they didn't focus on
it providing CD-quality sound, because they did.


You will also find, if you
look back to 1995 and the big international consumer electronics
exhibition in Berlin, that all the original manufacturers of DAB
radios made them for the car.


That proves nothing.


I had left the BBC before any DAB transmitters came on air, so I have
no idea how it was being promoted.


The main selling point of DAB for the early years was that it would provide
CD-quality sound.
