On an ordinary medium sized TV set you are just not making use of the
full 576 interlaced lines of resolution. It might as well be a 288
line progressive scan, as produced by the VHS freeze, and you would
not notice the difference.
What do you count as "normal size"? I've a 6 year old 32" CRT and it's
screamingly obvious when half the lines go missing.
This is also why programmes like "Fifth Gear" can get away with
dropping alternate fields to produce film effect. You just don't
notice the drop in resolution to 288 lines.
I certainly do - it looks absolutely terrible! Staircase effects on
shallow angle high contrast edges, nasty shimmering effects on grids,
gratings, window blinds, distant brickwork and the like; on some
versions of the film effect there isn't even any accounting for the
vertical offset of the fields during display, so the entire picture
judders up and down by a scan line.
Now, guess why I don't watch Fifth Gear anymore?
I don't know why they do this. All TV's I've seen support a
non-interlaced mode - a kind of 288p with a full 50Hz refresh rate if
you will.
It was used extensively by older computers and video game systems. On
some, such as the Atari ST or the commodore amiga you could use
interlace mode and use the other 288 lines, if you wanted, at the
expense of flicker (but you gained higher resolution).
Any reason why the broadcast signal can't be in this format?
