Agreed: digibox remotes should include a volume control. (Most include just
a mute; a _few_ do indeed have full volume up/down.)

Or the other way round, my TV handset can control my Digibox, came with
the
codes to do it to. Freeview boxes use the standard IR signalling, there is
nothing non-standard about them.
"The" standard? From that, I'd assume any digibox control ought to control
any digibox. I very much doubt that that is the case!

correct time. I dunno why STB's cannot be more integrated and be treated
as
a seperate tuner to the TV/Video rather than a completely seperate device
as
it is today.
Because telly manufacturers aren't interested; they'd have to make much more
of the interface. ISTR it had to be legislation that finally made SCART
universal.
Another is lack of standardisation on the RF output. Someone facing
analogue switch off could easily buy a Freeview box with only an RFinvestment
loopthrough in good faith, thinking that they have made the right
to stay ahead of technology, only to find that it does not work with
their
non-scart TV. They'll have wasted their money, lost all their TV
channels,
and may not be able to afford another Freeview box of the right type.
Or perhaps they could just go straight back to the shop and swap it for
one
Hmm ... some years later? Oh, sorry, you said "straight" back - same trap as
I fell into. Probably, yes, in most cases; I think the Stephen had in mind
the (I'd have thought rare, but probably not that so) case of people who buy
a digibox now but don't actually use it until they have to.
that does ? Hopefully when buying it they'll have been advised on if the
model will match their needs ?
Ha (-:! Even assuming scrupulous honesty/knowledge on the part of the
dealers, the people likely to fall into this problem are unlikely to know
what their actual needs are in this respect, or some of them aren't anyway.
Though I am still surprised on how many TV's are being sold without
digital
Yes; I think we've had long enough now that legislation is needed - at the
very least requiring "not digital" or "analogue only" stickers, ideally
"will not receive broadcasts without a set-top box after 20xx". But really,
unless there really is some chance of the switch-off being cancelled, which
I don't think is realistically the case now, I can't see any reason _not_ to
have must-not-have-analogue-only legislation now (with a grace period for
clearance of stocks etc.). [I worded that must... carefully: I don't want to
stop the sale of sets with no tuner at all, in fact I'd like to encourage it
for those who want it!]
{Actually, that's an interesting point: does anybody do an STB that receives
both digital _and_ analogue?}
tuners. Everything seems to be "HD Ready" but by now I would have thought[]
that a Digital Tuner should be standard on all new TVs.
Certainly, I can see no excuse for an HD-ready model that does include an
analogue-only tuner to have been introduced at all, other than extreme
cynicism on the part of the makers.
