Apologies for wrong info in 'from' column.

Recently, I have seen several Artsworld programmes in genuine anamorphic
widescreen. I am puzzled about my set displaying 'correctly' as 4:3
because all other 4:3 transmissions allow me to choose 4:3 (black borders
either side) and a variety of zoom settings. However, the artsworld 4:3
seems to be within a 16:9 frame - giving black borders all round. -not
just at the sides! To watch this (and this is uniquely a problem with
Artsworld) I need to set the Sky box to 4:3 (as if I had a 4:3 TV) and
then zoom in with very noticeable loss of resolution. My set is a 32" CRT
Loewe. Artsworld used to be consistently 4:3 like many other channels, and
filled the top and bottom of the screen but not the sides unless zoomed
in. 16:9, set on the TV looked completely wrong, of course. So, the
problem is not as simple as it first seems, and on my setup, the solution
is not simple unlike all other channels with a mixture of 4:3 and 16:9. My
TV has a very clever setting which corrects unusual aspect rations 'on the
fly' but this cannot deal with Artsworld's settings.

I realise my description is probably unclear, but I have had Sky and
widescreen from almost day 1 of Sky Digital and remember emailing
Artsworld (I was a subscriber for a time) asking them to transmit in
'proper' anamorphic widescreen and incidentally to improve the audio
quality. I thought the channel poor value with second rate picture and
sound and terminated my subscription.

Incidentally, the normal definition Movie channels simulcasting the HD
ones are transmitting genuine DD 5.1 but labelling it as various other
audio settings. I am hoping Artsworld (normal definition) will do the same
and we can hear DD 5.1 on musical material - despite what the
'information' screen says!

On several programmes recently the aspect ratios or size more
acurately -have been completely wrong (also on repeat). Mainly the
widescreen programmes are broadcast (in parts) with the correct ratio
(16:9)
but zoomed out with very broad border all round. I have managed to
'salvage'
a rather good documentary about the singer Anne=Sophie von Otter, by
setting
picture to 4:3, copying to DVD and then zooming in on playback.

I phoned Sky Artsworld number who helpfully gave me that exact number to
phone! They could not understand what I was on about at all. Ironic that
HD
Artsworld seems to have started, that a programme I have on commercial
DVD
(correct ratios despite many changes) 'Art of the Piano' was broadcast
with
every 16:9 portion with a very broad border all round. Who do we tell?
Not a
good test of HD! I have nothing to do with the trade - can someone knock
some sense into them?

Artsworld have never broadcast in proper widescreen - I don't know why
they haven't caught up - it may be a matter of investment in equiment.
The picture format is 4x3 at all times, but widescreen programmes are
letterboxed - i.e. transmitted with black panels above and below so as
to include the full width. (At least they are not cropping the sides.)
Your widescreen set is correctly displaying the tranmission as 4x3, and
thus the set itself is producing the black panels to each side.

Most widescreen TVs have a 'zoom' facility which enlarges letterbox
transmissions to fiill the screen. Of course this reduces the vertical
resolution compared with a proper widescreen transmission (though the
lateral definition is of course the same) but is the best viewing
option.

Since HD is inherently widescreen, and will require new equipment
anyway, I would hope that the HD transmission will be properly
formatted.
