I was intrigued to read in this thread that some pirates are indeed switching
to mono.

It was for much the same reasons as for switching the PAL colour burst on and off
which also used to happen for mono programmes.


Firstly, on many receivers there was a 'splat' when the switch occurred, and secondly
as described in other posts, the FM signal is often more noisy when the pilot tone
is on than not.


It was nothing to do with finance. Engineers were more important than bean-counters
in those days ;-)
