Yes, I remember the time when radio 4, for example, only turned it on when it
was broadcasting stereo material - thus giving better reception to many the
rest of the time! (Especially since many stereo radios don't have a "mono"
switch.) I genuinely don't know why they stopped doing it: I can only assume
the reason was financial (including technical-financial, i. e. catering for
the control signal, and the time of the person whose 1/100 of a job it was to
monitor and control it, was exceeding the cost of the extra power used), added
to a small contribution from the thought that some people would think there
was something wrong with their set if the red light wasn't on.
I was intrigued to read in this thread that some pirates are indeed switching
to mono.
